For the last month or so, I have had this insane desire to eat a green tea J. Co doughnut. Insane because I don't really like glazed doughnuts and even more insane because it was reading Amir Muhamad's Yasmin Ahmad's Films that made me crave those doughnuts in the first place. It's an absolutely amazing book; while it is about Yasmin s films, it is also about Malaysia. Very much like her films, in that respect. The green tea J. Co doughnut -- with a bite taken out of it -- features prominently on the cover of the slim volume (after all, Yasmin only made six movies before she died in July this year). But why the doughnut? I'll let Amir explain. He wrote: 'When I considered what to put on the cover of this book, the green tea J. Co doughnut Yasmin loved came to mind. (Since I am writing this in the fasting month, it s safe to say that various types of food are never far from my mind, anyway.)' That sentence is representative of the tone of the book. While it takes a serious look at the films from a filmmaker's point of view (Amir is a filmmaker as well as writer/publisher), it is not dry or academic. You don't feel like you have been talked down to even as Amir examines the symbolism of certain scenes or structure of the narrative. Instead, the critiques of the six films teach you something valuable: how to see. Amir was a friend and as he said, 'A hazard of writing about a recently deceased friend is that everything might end up gushy.' But there is no danger of that here. While you can tell he did indeed love Yasmin, he does look at the work with a critical eye. But what makes this book remarkable is the parallel text about Malaysia that Amir incorporates into each movie chapter. They are not footnotes even though the layout of the book puts them near each other -- very cleverly done, I thought. This adds context to the movies discussed and like Amir wrote in the introduction: '... her work says a lot about what it means to be alive in Malaysia today.' Reading the parallel text is like getting a cultural history lesson of the country; you learn about telemovies, tudungs, maids, TV series, etc. And it is all written with the accuracy and sharp eye of a good journalist but mixed in is the trademark Amir sense of humour. --Joan Lau, The Malaysian Insider

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BOOK!! I’m only on day 17, but the questions are so cute and insightful. Some are silly, and some make you really think! i think it’s going to be super cool in 2022 to see what i wrote in 2018!!

I was given this gift for my 20th birthday, and it is the perfect time to receive it because the next five years of my life are going to be so formative. Being still in college, I've been able to do it with my roommate every night, making me reflect on my experiences. I've bought this book for two of my friends.It's low-commitment, only taking a few minutes in a day - perfect for a morning or evening routine.

Been wanting this journal for quite some time now & decided to go ahead and purchase it. Got exactly what I was expecting & can’t wait to start using it the first of 2019! Might have to go ahead and get my sister one as well.

I really wanted to start writing in a journal but just don’t have much time in my day so this is a really cool way to kind of capture what you’re going through and who you are at the time. The quality of the journal seems very durable. I’ve only had it for a few months but it feels like it should last being written in for 5 years! I love how it comes with a string bookmark so you don’t have to flip and find where you left off. There are few lines to write on so it forces you to be concise in your answers. Some questions are one word answers anyway.There was a review that stated that the questions can only be answered once and I can see that happening for a few that I have gotten to. But people can have life changing experiences that may change those answers.. you never know. And if the answer doesn’t change, it’s kind of cool to see that constant in your life.

From the time I was a young girl I have kept a journal off and on. More off than on. I love the idea of a journal and of leaving a legacy behind but in today's busy world it is hard to find the time consistently to devote to this type of writing. Keeping this on my nightstand and only having to answer one thoughtful question with a few sentences every night is so easy to keep up and if I miss a couple nights its no problem to go back and answer two or three at a time. It really be a wonderful thing to leave behind for my children and grandchildren to get a glimpse into my world.

I absolutely love this journal. I'm 21 and about to graduate college and potentially move (again) for graduate school this year. I decided to buy this journal because I am in a transformative time in my life. I am barely on day 3, but I already love the daily practice of forcing myself to reflect and write daily. Writing even a few sentences allows me to create a daily practice. Writing in this journal combined with meditation have become staples in my nighttime routine. I cannot wait to see how I change over the five years! I will be 26 when I start my final year! The questions are interesting and diverse. Some ask you about your character while others ask about your day. Some of your answers may remain constant depending on your circumstances while others will change. I am so excited for this journal journey.

I gave this journal to my 16 year old daughter. She loves it. She's going to treasure looking back at this over the 5 years she'll work on it and the rest of her life. It's perfect. The thoughtful question prompts make this a much more powerful process than if it just had blanks for each day of the year.

I have been looking for a 3 or 5-year journal like this for a while now. A lot of other journals like this are hardcover and I wanted something that would be easier to write in and with questions that I would actually want to reflect upon years later. With thay being said, I was very happy to find tis! The journal is flexible making it easy to write in but still firm enough to retain its shape and durability. The questions are insightful and fun, and I look forward to seeing the evolution in my answers as the years go by. I do wish there was just one more line for a bit extra space for writing answers. I would also enjoy this book in a 3-year format since I wonder how it will hold up for 5 years. All in all I love it and look forward to it as a part of my daily routine.
