About the Author
Thomas Duening previously was the director of entrepreneurial programs for the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and then attended the University of Minnesota, where he received his master’s degree in philosophy of science and his doctorate in higher education administration. While completing his Ph.D., Duening was a consultant at Robert S. Banks, Associates, Inc., an international consulting firm serving the electric utility industry. He also has served in many executive positions, including president of U.S. Learning Systems, LLC, vice president for Content Development at Edgia, Inc., and still remains owner and CEO of the consulting firm INSYTE Business Research Group. Before joining ASU in September 2004, Duening successfully launched the Entrepreneurial and Venture Development Center at the University of Houston-Downtown. For nine years, he was the assistant dean for administration, and international and executive programs at the C.T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston main campus. Duening is the author of numerous journal articles, and he is the author of 12 books on investing in entrepreneurship, including Technology Entrepreneurship released Aug. 19, 2009.

Dr. Robert H. Hisrich is the Garvin Professor of Global Entrepreneurship and Director of the Global Entrepreneurship Center at Thunderbird. He is also president of H&B Associates, a marketing and management consulting firm he founded. He has authored or co-authored fourteen books, including Entrepreneuship: Starting, Developing, and Managing a New Enterprise (translated into nine languages and now in its sixth edition), The 13 Biggest Mistakes that Derail Small Businesses and How to Avoid Them. Dr. Hisrich has served on the editorial boards of The Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Small Business Management, and Journal of International Business and Entrepreneurship. He has instituted academic and training programs such as the university/industry training program in Hungary, a high school teachers entrepreneurship training program in Russia, an Institute of International Entrepreneurship and Management in Russia, and an Entrepreneurship Center in Ukraine.

The basic ideas for eating to create an alkaline state in your body to achieve good health seem sound and it is easy to read. Beyond that, I'm perplexed by all the good reviews. I wanted to like this book, but the flaws and information that flies in the face of research results showing health benefits of some of their forbidden foods such as mushrooms and fermented foods, made me be doubt how much of the advice is sound and how much is to promote their extreme vegetarian agenda.- I was left wanting more details and corroborating evidence for some of the unsubstantiated claims, which are not widely ascribed to, such as the authors theories that your body should not have microforms (bacteria or fungus) in it and that red blood cells are capable of pleomorphism into bacteria and fungus.- The 16 pages of references are not cross referenced to the contents and are sorted alphabetically by author. Good luck finding more details on the Australian study mentioned to back up certain claims.- The vegetarian bias is so obvious it's almost funny. Animal foods are described in exaggerated disgusting terms and plant foods are yummy and energizing, with the exception of fruit, which is allowed only as an occasional treat, and whose sweetness is explained by the fact it is turning into alcohol, mold, and rotting. Condensed animal foods are bad, but condensed plant foods are good.- The faulty logic used to describe how much milk is used to make cheese, butter, and ice cream and how hard it is to neutralize is so blatant, I can't believe it made it past the editor or that any basic fact check was done. I checked my recipes and redid the math. Ice cream is my favorite example.Claim: 12 lbs milk (translation is 6 quarts) are needed to make 1 gallon of ice cream.Truth: 3 quarts of half and half are needed to make 1 gallon of ice cream. The excess skim milk is sold separately.Claim: It would take 240 cups or 15 gallons of something alkaline to neutralize 1 cup of ice cream.Truth: The ice cream in my freezer registered a pH between 6 – 6.5, so 1 cup of +9.5 alkaline water would neutralize the acid in that cup of ice cream. There would be acid waste products from digesting the ice cream, so you would need a little more, certainly nowhere near another 239 cups.- I don't think their plan is balanced, but rather seems like extreme vegetarianism which excludes anything fermented ever, mushrooms, and starchy acidic plant based food. There are exceptions. You can have acidic plant foods if they have alkalizing effects.- Food combining is the hardest concept and where the book lost me to the complexity of following their diet plan. There are five rules around combining, basically, mix no more than four foods from no more than two types of food at any meal and don't eat foods with different alkalizing effects required to digest together. Are you starting to see how complicated it would be to follow this diet?- There are too many recipes I would never use, with lots of soy, tofu, and things pretending to be what they're not such as mock mayonnaise, and mock pumpkin pie made of carrots. Tofu is their notable exception to eliminating highly processed foods, which is ironic since tofu falls under their forbidden food category; fermented.- I was really excited to see the chapter recommending to eat COWS, until I discovered it only meant Chlorophyll, good Oils, purified alkaline Water, and natural mineralized Salts. I'm still convinced the grass fed cow is a vegetarian and I'm going to enjoy and benefit from important nutrients it provides in meat and bone broths.- Potentially dangerous recommendations. Eat soy. Just Google the dangers and how little non GMO soy is available. While their advice of 3-4 teaspoons of salt a day comes with a warning, this seems dangerously high, especially when they add in suggestions like up to a tablespoon of baking soda (~3,000 mg of sodium) a day and seasoning your foods, without mentioning tracking your total salt intake. They recommend fish only every other month or not at all, but Omega 3 from fish is a different chemical composition from that of plants and is what your body needs. Your body does not sufficiently synthesize what you need from plant Omega 3.Rather than being balanced, the diet plan is extreme and complicated. Only the most dedicated disciplined vegetarians or extremely determined and motivated individuals would be able to follow it.

While some of the author’s theories seem just plain nutty, I was impressed to remove sugar, bread, chips, crackers, soft drinks and eggs from my diet. A1c went from 6.7 to 5.8. My family physician is amazed.

I initially purchased the kindle version, but had to return it for a refund since ALL of the informational charts were missing large chunks of information (not just formatted weird, but actually completely left out any info that didn't fit across one single line of the screen). However, I felt the information in the book was extremely valuable and knew I'd want to refer to it again and again, so I ended up ordering the paperback version.While I don't agree with everything the author says, and I will probably never be as militant about my diet as he is, the guideline he supplies is a good one. I plan to combine the diet plan in this book with the plan found in Joel Fuhrman's "Eat To Live" for what I consider to be a well-rounded, healthy diet.One of the things I liked most about this book is the author's plan to transition into a new way of eating. I've always failed in the past because one day you're eating one way, and the next day you're eating completely differently. As the author states, changing your diet for a lifetime is a marathon, not a sprint... and you need to work your way into it in stages (you can't just go from a sedentary lifestyle one day to running a marathon the next, you must train for a marathon). I am DEFINITELY applying his transition plan so I can make a dietary change that will last a lifetime.

This book changed my life for the better! After reading it, I cured myself of a bacterial lung infection which set me on a path of resilient health ever since. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in being well for the rest of their life.

I’ve read dozens of books on data mining. I’m also lead author on a data book that specifically uses IBM SPSS Modeler. Full disclosure: the author of this book and I coauthored the book about Modeler.This book takes a unique, and badly needed, approach to the subject. It is a “how-to” without being a software book. Too many software instruction books focus so much on features and functions that you lose sight of the big picture. Also, too many data mining books focus solely on algorithms – often one chapter per algorithm. While many of those books are good, and necessary, there are plenty of them already.This book invests approximately equal coverage to the six phases of the Cross Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM). The evidence that the author is an expert is easy to find. Rather than merely providing the usual boilerplate on statistical significance, he reminds the reader that data miners interpret the ability of their model to generalize differently and with different tools. Rather than writing a section on regression right out of a introductory statistics book, he shows how he sometimes uses regression for classification, an approach that is technically against the rules. Rather than just a laundry list of algorithms he dedicates an entire chapter to ensembles, describing it not as another algorithm, but as a way of thinking about problems. His descriptions of boosting and bagging are clear and succinct. The essence of the book is in someways captured by the fact that one brief section is entitled “Models Ensembles and Occam’s Razor,” a section that praises ensembles even though they seem to threaten parsimony.Perhaps, most importantly, he gives lots of advice. A book like this, on a topic like this, can be overwhelming in its factual detail. Knowledge of how the technique works does not imply action in and of itself. You need to know what you should do with this information. Applied Predictive Analytics is a coaching and mentoring session with someone that has been doing it for more than 20 years.

This is a very useful exploration of the practical aspects of machine learning -- especially considerations for deploying models for use in production operations. I went with 4 starts instead of 5 because of the content on text mining and NLP. That part of the book felt like it was partially written and perhaps rushed to publish. I don't think that's a huge deal, though, because there are plenty of books dedicated to text mining and NLP. As long as you are okay with the light treatment of unstructured data, you will find this book very useful and worth your time.

A must for any student or predictive analytics professional. The text dives into the theory needed to implement predictive analytics using your preferred software suite.

This book does an excellent job of explaining the principles of of Predictive Analytics and practical example of how to apply these principals using analytic software in a general way. It definitely helped my overall understanding of the different modeling techniques in general and the nuances of applying them.
