About the Author
Before going to Wayne State, Stephen Spurr was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Social and Decision Sciences at Carnegie-Mellon University. He has published articles in the RAND Journal of Economics, the Industrial and Labor Relations Review, the International Review of Law and Economics, the Journal of Labor Economics, the Journal of Human Resources, and many other journals. His primary research interests are in the areas of labor economics and economic analysis of law. He has published articles on promotion and turnover, sports economics, the economics of the legal and nursing professions, alternative dispute resolution, organ transplantation, medical malpractice, and capital punishment. He wrote an essay on Collateral Estoppel for The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics and the Law (London: Macmillan).

With a love of hand needlework of all types from early childhood, Cheryl Barnes discovered machine quilting and purchased a longarm machine in 1994. She began her own quilting business, Golden Threads, at that time. After quilting for several years, Cheryl felt limited by the lack of new patterns available to longarm quilters. "Because the Performance-based Hiring system does differ from traditional recruiting and hiring processes, questions arise as to whether employers can adopt Performance-based Hiring and still comply with the complex array of statutes, regulations, and common law principals that regulate the workplace. In particular: 

• A properly prepared performance profile can identify and document the essential functions of a job better than traditional position descriptions, facilitating the reasonable accommodation of disabilities and making it easier to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and similar laws. 
• Even employers that maintain more traditional job descriptions may still use performance profiles or summaries of performance profiles to advertise job openings. Employers are not legally required to post their internal job descriptions when advertising an open position. Nor is there any legal obligation to (or advantage in) posting boring ads. 
• Focusing on Year 1 and Beyond criteria may open the door to more minority, military, and disabled candidates who have a less 'traditional' mix of experiences, thereby supporting affirmative action or diversity efforts. 
• Conducting performance-based interviews ensures that the interviews will be structured and properly focused and minimizes the risk of an interviewer inquiring into protected characteristic. Moreover, since the performance-based interviews are conducted pursuant to a common methodology, one is assured that the candidates are being fairly compared. 
• Performance-based interviewing promotes fair consideration of the different skills and experiences that each candidate has to offer--which is essential to promoting diversity."

The book has so many uses, calling it just a bookof lists is a major insult.It sits next to my computer, and before I start to write,I spend about 5-10 minutes browsing through it.That usually jump starts the writing part of mind andgets me moving to either start a new book, or finish achapter in an existing manuscript.I also wear it out during editing and/or re-write phases,whena certain word or phrase is needed to fit into a certain situation.Not that it does your writing for you, no, that's all on and up to you.Master Lists for Writers, is a tool to help make you a better writer.Sitting down and writing is your job.Make sure you take advantage of everything available to get you to be agood WRITER.And this book will help you do just that.

My beta reader recommended this book and I am very grateful. I have been searching for something like this forever! I can stop making my own list now, she's got it all there. I love her trick to make good metaphors. It really works! It's a reference book you will go to over and over and over. She not only gives you dialogue options, but teaches you why and when to use them. It's a fast read and not full of a bunch of lengthy filler copy for those without time. Thank you for writing this!

Master Lists for Writers has a list of 400 different names for contemporary heroes and heroines.Another section covers dialogue and yet another has numerous lists devoted to plotting your story. The only downside I see to this book is that it is filled with so much useful information that you might be in danger of spending your time reading through the lists instead of actually doing your writing! But I think that Bryn Donovan even anticipated that possibility because the last list in the book is 10 Reasons Why You Should Write That Story.

This book contains a number of lists or cheat sheets for authors. Suppose the character you're describing is experiencing the emotion of fear, but you're not sure how to describe it. Turn to pages 37-38 and you'll find two dozen different suggestions for describing a character experiencing fear.Unfortunately, the book also contains descriptive sex lists for pornographers, and those wishing to write pornography, on pages 112-121 that are downright disgusting and undermine the entire book's integrity. Don't even think about giving this book to someone as a gift, especially a young writer, and especially a minor, without first ripping out those pages. It's that offensive. And they might report you to the police.

These lists are fantastic!In sections such as Emotional Descriptions, Descriptions of Gestures and Body Language, etc, phrases are used rather than just words. This extra content gives a better understanding of how the word can be used. It's also familiar, as I make notes of phrases I think would be useful when reading.Those lists where extra content could be confusing, such as physical description--which is broken down nicely into subcategories so you're not reading descriptive words of eye color when you need one for the eyebrows or mouth!--provide words that are capable of generating the proper image on their own.I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to writers, professional or amateur, who have trouble sometimes finding just the right word to get the image from their mind to the page.

I bought this book because I was having trouble finding the right emotions and actions for the characters in my story. I didn't expect to get so much more in this book. Each chapter is also broken down into sub-chapters to make phrases that I would want to use easier to find.My favorite part of the book was the Plotting Chapter, where the author lists various plot starters to get you going on your book as well as many other potential story ideas. This is great for when I have the characters in mind but not much else. I was also surprised at the character name section. The names aren't the usual ones you see in every other name book. These were broken down by names popular during certain time periods. The author seems to cover everything that I have trouble with when writing a book.This book had a little bit of everything all rolled into one. I buy a lot of writing instruction books, and if I had seen this one first, I wouldn't have bothered to buy anything else. This book is packed full of information.
